Youth Educational Shoplifting Program For Petty Larceny


The Youth Educational Shoplifting (Y.E.S.) Program, developed by the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention (NASP), is a comprehensive, "offense-specific" educational program that embraces the Restorative Justice Principles of accountability, competency development and community safety. The program helps juveniles identify the thoughts, beliefs and attitudes which led the to shoplift, and helps them make better choices for themselves and their future. NASP Programs are utilized in over 500 courts and agencies throughout 48 states.

Who Shoplifts?


Approximately one in eleven people and there is no typical profile of a shoplifter. A shoplifter can be anyone. Contrary to popular belief, boys & girls shoplift equally as often.

Effectiveness of the Program


Recidivism studies reveal that after completing the Y.E.S. Program, 97% of juveniles do not repeat the shoplifting offense. The study also measured the juveniles future involvement in shoplifting, as well as any subsequent involvement in other criminal activity. The juveniles studied represented a diverse population from various socioeconomic classes. Of the 1,040 juveniles studied, 985 (94.7%) were not rearrested for shoplifting. Recidivism Rate of 5.3% Of the 1,040 juveniles studies, 963 (92.6%) were not rearrested for shoplifting or any other criminal offense. Recidivism Rate of 7.4%. A recent program evaluation conducted by an external consulting group reported PYJ's overall program recidivism rate as almost 30% over a 2 year time period.
